Request Media opens in a new tab via Overseerr.

Simply put, it's a personal media server. It's like Netflix and Hulu except all the media files are stores on our. The server owner can then allow "library access" to friends and family and they can watch whatever is on the owner's personal Plex server. Think of it like you coming over to our house and popping in a DVD that we own, except you can do that from anywhere in the world on practically any device (mobile, PC, console, TV, etc.) completely free.
The first and obvious reason is it's free! Plex has made us and a lot of users on the server ditch regular streaming services. There's also the fact that movies and shows on the server *stay* on the server forever. No rotations, no movies that are "going away soon", no "oh yeah so the creators of this show went out of business so we're removing all their content from our platform". There's other benefits too, such as the Watch Together feature, the ability to request content, the fact that we have movies and shows that other streaming services don't have (foreign or obscure media) or are hard to find, and the list goes on.
On your end? Nothing. Because it's self-hosted software, the host (Naomi and I) absorb pretty much all the costs of setting up the server. This includes the machine that runs the Plex server software, the hard drives containing the movies and shows, along with other fees like internet and electricity. This means the end user (you) gets to enjoy everything completely free.
